Volunteer
The CSD relies on the help of its volunteers and allies to make its services and programs possible. Volunteers are recruited year-round, and training workshops are offered based on need and presence of new volunteers.
The CSD is actively recruiting allies. These individuals can follow special training that corresponds to the social and academic programming of the Student Federation and its federated bodies. This dream team is central to the development of an accessible 101 Week and reports on issues of accessibility as they come along. Its members are not only trained and ready to assist in whatever circumstances, but also crucial to a long-term and sustainable strategy for hosting accessible 101 Weeks and social events throughout the year.
Expectations of volunteers
All CSD volunteers are expected to
- Have an open mind and be willing to learn
- Respect students with disabilities
- Maintain confidentiality of personal information and respect the privacy of students with disabilities
- Be respectful of other volunteers and staff
- Possess enthusiasm for their volunteer work
- Be registered as a University of Ottawa student
- Commit at least one hour per week to the CSD and its projects and programs
- Follow through on commitments, volunteering opportunities and general events
- Help with communications in English, French, ASL, LSQ, writing, public speaking, other languages, tactile signing, (knowing all of these is by far not necessary, but any knowledge of any combination of these is a definite asset to our team.)
- Know, understand and uphold to the best of your ability the policies and procedures of the Centre for Students with Disabilities
Time commitment
All volunteers are expected to contribute on average at least one hour per week to the CSD. It is important for us to know that our volunteers are committed, willing and ready to contribute on an ongoing basis. For special events, additional commitments may be requested, but special events like 101 Week, concerts, guest lecturers, Awareness Week and Accessibility Day are fun.
Volunteer Opportunities
We currently require volunteers for a variety of tasks, including (but not limited to): helping with event logistics, assisting students in getting to their classes, raising awareness and partnering with students with disabilities who would like a workout partner. Other opportunities may arise as certain needs are identified, and will be sent to our volunteer mailing list when they are made available. Please contact us at csd@sfuo.ca for more details or to sign up.
